Natalie Dlugonski is an interior designer based in Edmond, Okla. With more than 20 years of experience.
How did you get your start in interior design?
I studied art and design in school, but always thought I would use it doing graphic design. When I got my first apartment after college, I had huge visions of making it beautiful, but I didn’t have a dime to my name to accomplish it. So, I borrowed my mom’s old Montgomery Ward sewing machine and taught myself to sew basic valances and pillows. I started sewing anything with a straight line! My projects turned into helping friends with their homes, and before I knew it, a business was born!
What is your inspiration and how do you engage new clients?
My clients are my inspiration! I ask a few questions, take a little bit of time to get to know them and always have one request, “show me something you love.” I can take it from there. Really, it’s a win-win situation for me. I love getting to know people and I love design, and I get to do both every day! My job is to create an environment that reflects my clients’ personalities, not mine. I hope to never leave a project and have it look like Natalie Dlugonski’s work.
What exciting projects are you currently working on?
My current projects are a nursery dreamland that makes my mouth water, a bedroom which is whimsy beyond imagination and a bathroom re-model that will transport you straight to the spa. Each one is so different and exciting. I can’t wait to see the final outcome of each!
What are your favorite design trends and ways to transform a room?
The design world has gone through a huge transformation in the past few years, and I love the simplicity and the cleanness of today’s look. The one thing that has never changed (nor will ever change) is the importance of the details. A clean slate is awesome, but filling a room with new furniture is just the beginning! The finishing touches are what make the difference.
Fabric and lighting have always been my weaknesses. To me, they are the best way to bring the personality of a room to life. They are where you get depth. Every room deserves the right mix of texture, warmth, yumminess and one little element of surprise that usually reveals itself in the most amazing way.
Natalie Dlugonski studied art and design at Oklahoma Christian University. She has worked in the industry for more than 20 years through client referrals. As a mother of two teenage boys who attend Crossings Christian School, Natalie needed a flexible schedule to be as involved in their activities as possible – life as a designer has allowed her to do just that!
Natalie has been a valued customer of Fabrics Unlimited since the beginning, and has been very supportive of the changes made to the inventory. She always appreciates the flexibility we have at Fab U and the fact that we allow her to work with her clients in the store. She loves the friendly environment and values the relationships she has formed with the staff at Fab U. She thinks the addition of accessories and art is a plus and uses it to her advantage… one stop shopping!
