Did you know we have some very talented design professionals here on the Fabrics Unlimited team? Not only do our designers work hard to make sure your projects meet all of your personal style needs, but they also work hard on their own design projects at home.
Beth Russ is one of those designers. Her passion for interior design pulled her away from a career in accounting and from there, Beth was able to find her spot on the Fabrics Unlimited team doing what she loves every day.
We sat down with Beth to pick her brain on all things design and she even gave us a peek into her own home and her personal design style.
Q: What are the top trends you predict for the rest of the year?
Beth: I anticipate that we will continue to see a lot of neutrals but accented with a pop of color. I think people are enjoying the look of a softer palette throughout their home but still want to add their own personality to it by adding color through pillows, art or lighting. I am also seeing more gold tones and copper in hardware and fixtures.
Q: How long have you been doing design work?
Beth: I have been “designing” for as long as I can remember. Rearranging my room, painting a fresh color or adding new accessories. My mom was a teacher with a good eye for décor, so we always spent time in the summer painting and changing things around the house. I still ask for her input today. I guess you could say I have been getting paid to do what I love on and off for the last 10 years.
Q: What are you favorite types of projects to work on?
Beth: I love anything to do with draperies. Drapes have a way of bringing the room together and softening harsh lines. I also love to decorate bookshelves and organize. With two active kids, I have to have a system at home that not only looks pretty, but also is functional to keep us on track.
Q: What’s your favorite room in your home?
Beth: It’s hard to say! Each room in my house has its own personality. I love my kitchen and family room because that’s where we spend the most time together as a family or with friends. My bedroom is cozy and calm which is a perfect place to retreat at the end of the day. The playroom is full of fun pops of color with fabrics that I love but wouldn’t work anywhere else in my house!
Q: If there was one thing in your house that you could redo what would it be?
Beth: The laundry room! Who doesn’t need more space and cabinets in the laundry room?
Q: Where do you draw your inspiration?
Beth: I draw inspiration from all over, really. I am always looking at magazines and online for ideas and I watch HGTV anytime I have the chance. I love and appreciate so many different styles but for my own house, I tend to go more casual with a rustic feel. The cowboy and Indian influence has always been a big part of our family so my artwork and decor tend to reflect that.
Q: What made you want to be a designer?
Beth: It just makes me happy. I love meeting new people, hearing their stories and helping them create their own unique space. We all need a place we feel comfortable, secure and surrounded by things we love. Home is my happy place so I just want to help others feel the same about their home.
